Joseph Wood

The death is announced of another early settler, Mr Joseph Wood, builder and contractor, at tho age of sixty-six years. Born in Adelaide in 1839, Air Wood, with his parents, came to the Bay of. Islands' in 1841, and resided there during the Maori troubles, He went to Nelson in 1843, and in 1862 came to Canterbury.
He was an enthusiastic cricketer, and played against the first All England Eleven. He represented Canterbury for many years in interprovincial cricket, and visited Melbourne as a member of a New Zealand team.
In boating he rowed for the Trades’ Club for several years, and did some amateur walking.
As a chess player be was perhaps best known, having played .with considerable success in interprovincial tournaments. He leaves a widow and one daughter.
