H. C. PIRANI.
Mr H. C. Pirani, whose death occurred on September 26, in Napier, at the age of 77, arrived in Victoria in 1854, and come to New Zealand in 1867, settling down in Hokitika in the palmy goldfields days. Since then he has been engaged in journalistic pursuits. For a time he edited the West Coast Times and other papers in Westland, and went to Napier in 1876 as sub - editoi of the Hawke’s Bay Herald, subsequently filling the editorial chair. He remained in harness almost till the last, being compelled only a few. weeks ago to give up the work he loved so well.

Mr Pirani was widely esteemed as a courteous gentleman, and a capable journalist of the old school, and both friends and opponents will regret the loss of one whom both could respect. A strong Conservative in politics he always respected the opinions of his opponents, and in writing to his son about his Liberalism not long ago, remarked that, although he regretted his views were not strictly in accord with his own, he hoped he would vote according to his convictions, as younger men saw the world with different eyes.

He leaves a widow and seven children, the eldest son being a solicitor in Melbourne, the second Mr Fred Pirani, M.H.R., Mr D. Pirani, manager of the Manawatu Standard, two sons in Napier, and one married and one unmarried daughter.

Jewish Heritage [3]
While in Melbourne the Piranis were members of the Hebrew Congregation. On 26th November 1867 the family sailed for New Zealand aboard the Gothenburg, landing in Hokitika and settling there during the goldfield days. At least one daughter was born in New Zealand, in 1869. Sometime after arriving in New Zealand the Piranis seem to have Anglicised their Jewish names. Henry, for instance, used the names Henry Charles rather than Henry Cohen Pirani.
Henry initially worked in Hokitika as a merchant but later switched to journalism. In the early 1870s the family moved to Napier where Henry eventually became the editor of the Hawkes Bay Herald newspaper.
