Alfred Jowitt has boon for many years a membor of the Auckland Chess Club, and an enthusiastic lover of the game. That he had to retire after playing half his games at the lata tourney was a matter of great regret to him, and the circumstance would not havo occurred if by any means it could have been avoided. Mr. Jowltt was also a competitor at two previous colonial tourneys, in 1899-91 and 180293, He has been very successful in club contests, having been on one occasion champion for two ye ars In succession, and every year is well up.

OBITUARY.
MR A. N. JOWITT.
A "well-known resident of Auckland and one who was associated with the early days of Otago, Mr Alfred Norton Jowitt, of Eden terrace. New North road, Auckland, died last month at the age of 88 years. Born in Leeds, Yorkshire. England, Mr Jowitt-went to sea as a lad of 18 on the clipper Assyrian in the China trade. He came to New Zealand on the ship Nimrod in 1860, and made a second voyage a year later to Auckland in the Ida Zeigler. Just about that time gold was discovered in Otago, so Mr Jowitt, with four others, left his ship and saileq in a schooner in order to get to Gabriel Gully. Afterwards he worked on a sheep farm near Balclutha, and in 1867 h§ married a daughter of Mr Adam King, of Otago. Later, Mr Jowitt bought a farm of 400 acres in the South Molyneux dis- ‘ trict, where he helped to build the first, day school and Sunday School at Ahuriri. it was constructed of wattle and clay daub. Mr Jowitt held many’public posit tions, including that of chairman of thiq South Molyneux Road Board and of thq Clutha County Council. He entered intq partnership in a flourmill, and when tha| was burned down went to Auckland, where he opened business as a grain anrj produce merchant, from which he retired some years ago. Mr Jowitt was a great chess player, and some years ago had the honour of being the champion of Auckland.

LATE MR. A. N. JOWITT.
TRIBUTE IN PRESBYTERY,
Striking tributes to the late Mr. A N. Jowitt were paid at the meeting of the Auckland Presbytery yesterday. Mr. T. McMillan, who moved that the Presbytery should express its sympathy with, the relatives, said Mr. Jowitt had been working in Otago for the Presbyterian Church before some of those who had grey hairs now were born. He was working there in 1861 or 1862, and he used to supply Sunday services in those • days when ministerial services were scant. When he came to Auckland he joined St. Stephen's Church, and then St. David's, of which he was for 41 years a member, for 39 years an elder, and for 24 years its session clerk. He visited prisoners at Mount Eden at appointed services for 25 years, without missing a service. Mr. Jowitt's note was always one of cheerfulness. He moved that the Presbytery convey to the family its sympathy in their loss, and its nigh appreciation of the work Mr. Jowitt had done for the Presbyterian Church throughout his long life. The motion was supported by Mr. J. L. Fairgrav, and carried,
