He was second on a previous occasion, and gave promise of being champion in the near future. He will be greatly missed in chess circles, where he was so popular a man.

New Zealand Mail 4 February 1897
It is with profound rogret that we have to record the death from brain fever of Mr H. S. Cooks, at Sydenham, on the 22nd ulto, at the early age of 31 years. •' Mr Cocks for some time past has not been in the most robust of health, but there was nothing in connection therewith to give any cause for alarm, and it was anticipated that the long mid-summer holidays would send him back to his duties as one of the masters of the Wellington College strong and well again. This was, however, unfortunately not to be.j. Mr Cocks has been a member of tnfcf.. Wellington Chess Club ever since he has been in Wellington, and so improved.by study, and the cultivation of his great natural abilities, as to become a player of considerable strength and force. He took part in the three last championship.tournaments, at the first of which he came out second to Mr Mackay. At Wanganui last year he.was not placed, but at Christchurch this year he tied with Mr Mellor for second prize, and, as we said in our issue of the 14thulto., there was every reasonable of his filling the premier position in one of these tournaments within a comparatively short period. Mr Cocks was a cultured, thoughtful gentleman, [who was held in high esteem by his fellow chess players, and a wide circle of friends and acquaintances, and his memory will be long treasured by them. The game we give above is a good example of his style of play, which, as a rule, was markod by much care and caution.
