New Zealand Problem Composers (By A. C. White)

Evening Post 22 January 1923
H. L. Andersen, the Canterbury champion, made his first appearance at the Wanganui Congress (1895-96). Although the. entry list was a formidable one, and he was only sixteen years of age, he tied for fifth' place, and had the satisfaction of defeating the then champion (now Brigadier-General Meldrum). In the following year he again tied for fifth place, and on that occasion made a better tally than four of New Zealand's ex-champions. He then retired, and has consequently now returned to the arena under the big.handicap of a 26-years' absence, which explains why he did not occupy a higher place in the recent tourney. It may be added that Mr. Andersen has more than onoe proved himself New Zealand's champion problem solver.
