George Henry Davies

Died: 15 June 1914, (aged 70), Karori, Wellington, NZ

George Henry Davies was born on 25 January 1844, at Paihia, Bay of Islands. He was educated at the school run by his mother and grandmother and at the Church of England Grammar School, Auckland, under Dr Kinder. In 1872 he joined the Government Services in Wellington as an interpreter. Upon the promotion of Mr T.E. Young to the position of judge of the Native Land Court, George became a translator. When Sir Donald McLean was Native Minister, George frequently accompanied him on his journeys in a confidential capacity. He retired in 1907. He was a member of the Karori School Committee for a number of years, keen on chess, a recognised poet, and a keen follower of rugby football. He married Rose Alma Godfrey (b. 25 November 1854) on 4 August 1881 and they had six children. George died on 15 June 1914.
