DEATH OF REV. A. W. H. COMPTON [1]
The death occurred suddenly at New Plymouth yesterday of tho Rev. A. W. H. Compton, formerly vicar of Brooklyn, Wellington, and well-known also in the Wairarapa and Wanganui districts.

Canon Coinpton was born in London in 1868, and was educated at Emmanuel 'College, Cambridge. While at college he was prominent in athletic sports, and won the college mile on three occasions.

He came to New Zealand in 1896, and was appointed vicar of,Waimate Plains, Taranaki; in 1903 he received an appointment in the Wanganui parochial district; transferred to Mangatainoka in.1906; became warden of Bishop Hadfleld Hostel, Wellington, 1909; vicar of Greytown, 1914; and in 1920 accepted the position of vicar of Brooklyn.

Canon Compton served as chaplain to the Eighth Contingent in the South African War, being awarded the Queen's Medal, three clasps, and the twenty years' service medal.

He was the author of a pamphlet entitled "Some Familiar Hymns."
The title of Hon. Canon of St. Paul's Cathedral was conferred on him in 1925.

About the beginning of last year Canon Compton resigned his charge at Brooklyn on account of ill-health and paid a visit to England, returning to New Zealand in October last.

Canon Compton was unmarried, and had no relatives in New Zealand.
